Why STEAM?

STEM is an acronym that represents a group of subjects – Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. It is generally accepted that these disciplines create four pillars of human progress and future prosperity (but also nowadays). It is true that advances in biotechnology, engineering, programming and science forever changed our lives and tailored today’s lifestyle, but have you ever wondered how did the scientist come to their discovery?

STEAM is a relatively new concept with addition of Arts in STEM framework. By doing so, it transforms the concept and gives it a new creative dimension. STEAM is not just a group of science fields, it is an educational methodology, a creative approach to scientific discovery. STEAM applies creative thinking and design skills to discover different solutions to challenges. It is characterized by creative approach to STEM and any other disciplines because, as we know, discoveries do not appear in uniform environments. STEAM is not about spending less time on science, technology, engineering, and math to make room for art, it is about sparking students’ imagination to be innovate through hands-on STEM projects. By applying Art, students are encouraged to be curious experiment and brainstorm about the possibilities of our world, all in collaboration with one another.

This is why STEAM is a special ingredient in our Mind over matter project. The way we will use STEAM methodology in our project to reach those who would contribute in STEM fields but are turned off by difficult subjects like math, chemistry and physics, or are not seeing people like them successfully represented in STEM fields. We will develop new STEAM methodology that will demystify science and scientific processes in order to increase young people’s confidence in approaching STEM education and/or careers.
